One of the great successes of Brazilian theater today, Clayton Nascimento's one-man show MONOS makes us reflect on racism and social prejudices, rethinking the history of Brazil in search of the origins of the country's history.
Monos is about the urgency of black life in Brazil.
The famous insult directed against blacks, "MONO (MONKEY)," is the starting point for addressing prejudice against blacks. A black man immerses himself in the history of his country, in search of answers to the racism that surrounds him in his daily life. In this journey, between historical facts and everyday experiences lived by great black artists, ranging from Machada de Assis, Elza Soares, and Bessie Smith, the protagonist comes to the present day to talk about the young blacks arrested and executed by the military police.
The play also reflects on slavery, with which most European countries became rich over the years. For this reason, Clayton Nascimento uses elements and historical facts from the different countries where he will present the play to establish direct contact with the local audience.
