Marcelo Leonart

Marcelo Leonart is a writer, dramaturge and theater director. He co-founded the company La Pieza Oscura in 2004. In addition to his work with this ensemble, his direction of Flores de Papel (2018) by Egon Wolff stands out. As a writer, his short story Maribel Bajo el Brazo won the Juan Rulfo Short Story Prize organized by Radio France International (1998). He has published the volumes of short stories Mujer Desnuda Fumando en la Ventana (1999) and La Educación (2012, Consejo Nacional del Libro y la Lectura Award) and the novels Fotos de Laura (2012, Revista de Libros de El Mercurio Award), La Patria (Tajamar, 2012), Lacra (2013, National Book and Reading Council Award) Pascua (Tajamar, 2015), El Libro Rojo de la Historia de Chile, a novel that was among the seven finalists for the 2015 Herralde Novel Prize, and Weichafe (2018, National Book and Reading Council Award). Nona Fernández

Nona Fernández is an actress and writer, co-founder of the company La Pieza Oscura in 2004. As a writer, she has published the volume of short stories El Cielo (2000), the novels Mapocho (2002), Av. 10 de Julio Huamachuco (2007), both winners of the Literature Municipal Prize; Fuenzalida (2012), Space Invaders (2013), Chilean Electric, La Dimensión Desconocida (2017), that received the Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz Award, and the literary essay Voyager (2019). El Taller (2012), her first theatrical piece, was the winner of the Altazor Award for Best Dramaturgy 2013, and the Nuez Martín Award for Best Play 2014. She also wrote Liceo de Niñas (2015), and as an actress she has participated in various productions, highlighting Prefiero que me Coman los Perros, for which she received the Art Critics Circle Award for Best Actress 2018. Her authorial work stands out for its focus on the recent memory of the country: a gateway to the active memory of the dictatorial years that continue to define the reality of the Chilean present.

The company
La Pieza Oscura is a theater company led by Nona Fernández and Marcelo Leonart, artists with more than twenty years of experience. Their main interest lies in developing their own dramaturgy. Their productions include Grita (2004), written and directed by Marcelo Leonart, El Taller (2012), written by Nona Fernández and directed by Marcelo Leonart, Liceo de Niñas (2015), written by Nona Fernández and directed by Marcelo Leonart, and Noche Mapuche (2017) by Marcelo Leonart.
-The new work of the company La Pieza Oscura is based on the book Space Invaders by Nona Fernandez, a short but poetically profound novel about memory. The book has been published in Chile (Alquimia, 2012), Argentina (Eterna Cadencia, 2013), Cuba (Casa de las Américas, 2015), Colombia (Laguna, 2018), Mexico (Fondo de Cultura Económica, 2020), and has been translated to French (Zinnia, 2014), Italian (Edicola, 2015), German (Septime Verlag, 2018), English (Graywolf, 2019), and Greek (Gutemberg, 2020).
-The keys to getting into Space Invaders are dreaming, being playful, and remembering. Since a group of women meet and remember their school years through dreaming, the proposal seeks to be non-realistic "where the dreamlike atmosphere is the container for the great game that is the mise-en-scène. It´s a game like Space Invaders, with stages, keys, dynamics and challenges for the characters, which unfold playfully on stage, configuring the narration of the memory to the audience", explains Nona Fernández.
-Some of the issues explored in the play are: education in times of the dictatorship, the transition from childhood to adulthood -when they leave their safe classroom towards the street-, and the configuration of collective memory, where the past is key in the elaboration of the present and the future. Therefore, empathy and affection are two important elements of Space Invaders, in which the childish point of view and a wink to pop culture of the eighties seeks to connect with the audience. "The play will be a loving invitation to remember and to pass on those memories to new generations," adds the playwright.
-The importance of remembrance and memory that is configured in the play also brings to the present the "Caso Degollados", the ferocious kidnapping, torture and murder by slitting the throat of three communist militants in 1985: José Manuel Parada, Santiago Nattino and Manuel Guerrero. Estrella, the high school classmate of the protagonists, was the daughter of one of those responsible for the crime: Guillermo González Betancurt.

Fuenzalida, Riquelme, Zúñiga y Maldonado son un grupo de mujeres cansadas, sin tiempo ni vida para recordar. Sólo cuando sus agotados cuerpos se duermen y entran en el sueño, su memoria se activa y logran reencontrarse. En ese difuso territorio tratan de organizar un recuerdo común: Estrella González, una joven compañera del liceo que nunca más volvió a clases luego de un feroz y real suceso que marcó a fuego a toda una generación. El asesinato de tres militantes comunistas, denominado el “Caso Degollados”, del cual el padre de Estrella habría sido uno de los responsables. Recordando a Estrella, reconstruyen los años de su propia educación, el Chile de los 80.
Sueños y recuerdos. Memorias fragmentadas. Juegos del pasado y del presente. Que qué es política, que qué es violencia, que qué es recordar. -Las claves para entrar a Space Invaders son el sueño, el juego y el recuerdo. Debido a que un grupo de mujeres se encuentran y recuerdan sus años de escolaridad a través del sueño, la propuesta busca ser no realista “donde la atmósfera onírica es el contenedor para el gran juego que es la puesta en escena. Un juego como el Space Invaders, con etapas, claves, dinámicas y desafíos para los personajes, que se van desplegando lúdicamente en el escenario configurando la narración del recuerdo al público”, explica Nona Fernández.
-Entre los temas que explora la obra está la educación en tiempos de dictadura, el paso de la niñez a la adultez -cuando salen de su segura sala de clases a la calle-, y la configuración de una memoria colectiva, donde el pasado es clave en la elaboración del presente y el futuro. Por ello, la empatía y el afecto son dos elementos importantes de Space Invaders, en que el punto de vista infantil y el guiño a la cultura pop de los ochenta busca conectarse con el público. “La obra será una invitación cariñosa a recordar juntos y a traspasar esos recuerdos a las nuevas generaciones”, añade la dramaturga.
-La importancia del recuerdo y la memoria que se configura en la obra también trae al presente el “Caso Degollados”, feroz secuestro, tortura y asesinato a tres militantes comunistas el año 1985: José Manuel Parada, Santiago Nattino y Manuel Guerrero. Estrella, la compañera de liceo de estas mujeres, era hija de uno de los responsables: Guillermo González Betancurt.
