Circa Contemporary Circus is one of the world's leading performance companies. Since 2004, from its base in Brisbane, Australia, Circa has toured the world performing in over 45 countries to nearly 2 million people. Circa's works have been met with standing ovations, rave reviews and sold-out shows on six continents.
Circa is at the forefront of the new wave of contemporary Australian circus, pioneering the way in which extreme physicality can create powerful and moving performances. The company keeps pushing the boundaries of this art form, blurring the boundaries between movement, dance, theater and circus. Driven by the question «what is possible in the circus? Circa leads the way with a diverse range of exciting creations that “redefine the limits to which circus can aspire» (The Age).
Under the direction of circus visionary Yaron Lifschitz, Circa features an ensemble of exceptional multi-skilled circus performers who have been regulars at major festivals and venues in New York, London, Berlin and Montreal, with seasons at the Brooklyn Academy of Music, the Barbican Centre, Les Nuits de Fourvière, Chamäleon Theatre, as well as major Australian festivals.
“A rich and exciting demonstration of the emotional and choreographic potential of contemporary circus, juxtaposing moments of almost balletic grace with astonishing feats of strength and skill, to the sound of one of the finest pieces of orchestral music ever written.”
- Arts Hub, Australia
“A choreography that responds to the shapes and textures of the music.”

The acclaimed Australian company Circa arrives at the Teatro a Mil 2025 International Festival with a thrilling version of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, performed with two pianos, timpani, solo singers and the University of Chile Symphonic Choir, along with ten world-class circus artists, who present it in its versatile and extraordinary physical form.
Fearless and fierce, human drama is writ large in Beethoven 9, with emotionally charged choreography intricately woven to reflect the great German composer's powerful score. Extreme dexterity and dramatic acrobatics come together in this moving hymn to Humanity, blurring the boundaries between movement, music, dance, theater and circus.
Described as “a revolution in the art of circus,” Circa, under the direction of Yaron Lifschitz, has forged an astonishing reputation for combining acrobatic skills with a sophisticated, interdisciplinary approach to music, making this version of the Ninth Symphony a unique and memorable collaboration.
Beethoven's Ninth and last symphony, composed and conducted by the master when he was almost completely deaf, has inspired generations of performers and musicians. On this occasion, the piano version by the German musician Otto Singer is performed, under the musical direction of Luis Alberto Latorre, winner of the National Music Award President of the Republic in 2016, who also integrates the cast of performers along with Tamara Buttinghausen, in the piano duo TALA; accompanied by the Symphonic Choir of the University of Chile, conducted by Juan Pablo Villaroel, Camerata Vocal de la Universidad de Chile, the timpani of Juan Coderch (Altazor Award 2005) and the solo singers; Andrea Aguilar (soprano), Evelyn Ramírez (contralto), Patricio Saxton (tenor) and Patricio Sabaté, (baritone)”.
In this way, Beethoven 9 will combine the precise physical dexterity of Circa with the neatness of the musicians and performers of the Centro de Extensión Artística y Cultural (CEAC) of the Universidad de Chile, becoming one of the most outstanding events of the 32nd edition of the Festival Teatro a Mil.
Circa'sBeethoven 9 was commissioned by the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra to celebrate Beethoven's 250th birthday in 2020.
Circa is grateful for the support of the Australian Government through Creative Australia, its lead arts investment and advisory agency, and the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland.
